About

Hi, I’m Paul Malen.  I am a Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA), Certified in Financial Management (CFM), have a Masters in Business Administration from Gonzaga University and have over 29 years of experience in providing financial, accounting, IT, risk management and HR leadership to rapidly growing companies.  My industry experience is diverse covering aviation, mining, retail, and manufacturing.  I have enjoyed improving processes utilizing lean techniques, increasing profitability, and developing team members into effective, action-oriented leaders. Currently I am Chief Financial Officer of McVay Brothers Contractors and the Coeur d’Alene Window Company.

Over the years I have spent many late nights struggling with getting the financial statements completed in a somewhat timely manner.  Like 10+ days.  There were constant battles trying to extract information from other people who knew I needed the information yet somehow “forgot” and sent it to me late.   There had to be a better way…

Armed with some lean tools, serious motivation to get off this roller coaster of endless frustration, I started implementing some changes while at Cascade Windows.  Starting out, the close process took 12-15 days.  By applying the ideas and methods presented on this website, we were able to reduce the close process to 2 1/2 days and increased the accuracy.  This was done during several years of 35% annual growth and overall growth in 5 years of about 270%.  We also completed two acquisitions during that time frame.

So…it can be done.  I started this website and blog to share my ideas so that you can start using them today to get control of your financial reporting processes.  Don’t listen to anyone who says it cannot be done.

“Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.”
